The Importance of Status Reports

Status reports are a feature that is provided by almost all top-notch online backup services.  This is a great idea for many reasons, the most basic of which is that it insures that the person who is utilizing the service is as informed as possible as to just how backed up they are in the first place.

However, there are many elements to consider when comparing the status-report style of any online backup services.  For instance, most companies provide two basic different types of reporting, the first of which is a summary report.  This particular type of report should be visible at any time, and from any device that you use, if the company is at all, indeed, worth it’s salt in the first place.  This way you will be kept abreast of any failures that happened when the service was last  attempting to backup your files, which is obviously of supreme importance if you want to be absolutely sure that all your digital material is completely backed up.

The second sort of report that any quality online backup service should provide would be the “detailed”  report.  This would include all sorts of important information, such as a complete and thorough listing of all the files that are backed up and have been backed up recently.  This allows the user to not only double-check that all the right files have been uploaded to the online backup company’s servers, but also makes it so that they can see how often the backup software (that is usually provided for free by the company in question) is actually performing backups.  This is important in that it not only ensures that the software is doing its job, but also, primarily in cases where the main computer being backed up experiences considerably compromised performance during the process of backing up, can be informative as to when certain periods of backing up that are being performed are redundant, and thus unnecessary.
